January 2009 Update
On January 17, 2009 the University of Cambridge celebrated its 800th anniversary. Cambridge has won more than 80 Nobel Prizes, more than any other institution in the world. It is the home of Newton and Darwin, and the birthplace of 3D computer games and the webcam. 1209 Groups of scholars gather at Cambridge 1584 The Cambridge University Press, the world's oldest press, is founded. 1687 Isaac Newton publishes 'Principia Mathematica', the birth of modern physics. 1829 the first Boat Race between Cambridge and Oxford 1859 Charles Darwin's 'On the Origin of Species' is published. 1932 The atom is split at the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge. I 1934 Flight Lieutenant Frank Whittle invents the jet engine at Cambridge 1953 Francis Crick and James Watson discover the structure of DNA, and the new science of genetics. 1988 Professor Stephen Hawking publishes 'A Brief History of Time' 2008 Cambridge Assessment (including Cambridge ESOL Examinations) celebrates its 150th anniversary. 2009 The University of Cambridge celebrates its 800th anniversary.
